The SMART System's Dual Density Core works by influencing the gate cycle and controlling forces generated on the ankles and knees. It does this by means of a strategically placed high density wedge embedded within the softer lower density midsole. The function of the wedge is to rotate the foot slightly inward, thus alleviating stress on the cartilage of the ankle and knee. This can help in reducing the painful effects of osteoarthritis of the knees.
Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle age onward. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the hip, knee, and thumb joints. Osteoarthritis symptoms can usually be effectively managed, although the underlying process cannot be reversed. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and other treatments may slow progression of the disease and help improve pain and joint function.
