What is osteoarthritis?

More than 30 million Americans are affected by osteoarthritis. Also known as “wear and tear” arthritis, this degenerative condition damages the joint cartilage between bones. Those who suffer from osteoarthritis may experience localized pain, stiff joints, swelling, tenderness and decreased range of motion. As the condition worsens, cartilage can wear away causing bones to painfully rub together and cause further damage to the joints.

Major factors of osteoarthritis include aging, obesity, genetics, and knee injury. In fact, osteoarthritis of the knee-the most common form of this condition reduces mobility among a large and growing portion of the population. As a result, those who lack mobility because of osteoarthritis are more likely to develop other serious health conditions indicative of an inactive lifestyle.
