Supportive Shoes, Insoles Can Help Ease Overpronation Pain |
| |
| Your feet are the foundation of your body, so when they are out of alignment, your entire skeletal structure feels it. Overpronation, or flat feet, is one such condition, occurring when the arch of your foot becomes fully collapsed or rolls inward. When you have overpronation, you don't have any crucial arch support, and must therefore shift pressure from walking to other parts of the foot, which can cause intense pain. If left untreated, overpronation not only causes pain, but can lead to other, more serious foot and lower body joint problems. |
| |
| What Causes Overpronation? |
| |
Overpronation can be present at birth or develop at an early age, and is often a hereditary condition. In some people, however, overpronation develops as a symptom of foot abuse from any of the following factors:
- Weakened muscles due to aging or heavy strain placed on the feet may cause overpronation.
- Standing or walking for long periods in high heels can lead to overpronation.
- Wearing shoes that don't provide proper arch support may be a contributing factor to the development of overpronation.

| Recognizing the Symptoms of Overpronation |
| |
If you notice discomfort and pain in the arch region, you could have overpronation. As the normal arch begins to drop, walking can become very uncomfortable. When suffering from overpronation, the foot can also turn outward at the ankle, causing a walk that's concentrated on the inner border of the foot.
All in all, if you have overpronation, you automatically have less supportive feet, which can lead to postural strain, misalignment and thus daily discomfort throughout the foot, ankle, knee and lower back areas.
With overpronation, the depression of the arch in the foot also puts more strain on the ligament and tendons that support the foot and ankle, and over time, the bones may collapse. People suffering from overpronation can therefore develop heel spurs, ankle sprains, hip and lower back pain and even arthritis. |

| Help Relieve and Prevent the Development of Overpronation |
| |
Most people can help treat overpronation just by wearing the proper shoes. If you have overpronation, your shoes should offer great support and stability through the arch. People with overpronation can also use insoles that support the arch and help stabilize the heel.
Also, if you have overpronation, consider using custom orthotics to aid in arch support.
People with extreme cases of overpronation may need surgery to help stabilize the bones and improve foot support and function. A podiatrist or orthopedic doctor will decide if surgery is necessary to help ease the pain caused by overpronation. |
