| Pronation is the medical term that refers to the rolling-in or flattening out of the foot's arch, which can result in flat feet. Please click on the "To Health Facts" link below for more information. Your feet are the foundation of your body, so when they are out of alignment, your entire skeletal structure feels it. Pronation, or flat feet, is one such condition, occurring when the arch of your foot becomes fully collapsed or rolls inward. When you have pronation, you don't have any crucial arch support, and must therefore shift pressure from walking to other parts of the foot, which can cause intense pain. If left untreated, pronation not only causes pain, but can lead to other, more serious foot and lower body joint problems. Pronation can be present at birth or develop at an early age, and is often a hereditary condition. In some people, however, pronation develops as a symptom of foot abuse from any of the following factors: Weakened muscles due to aging or heavy strain placed on the feet may cause pronation. Standing or walking for long periods in high heels can lead to pronation. Wearing shoes that don't provide proper arch support may be a contributing factor to the development of pronation.
