Patellar Tendonitis

Inflammation and degeneration of the tendon that connects the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia) is called patellar tendonitis. Chronic pain in the front of the knee is often the result of patellar tendonitis. Basketball, volleyball, and other sports that require a lot of jumping are often associated with patellar tendonitis, which is why patellar tendonitis is known for causing “Jumper’s Knee Pain.”

Causes of Patellar Tendonitis

Patellar tendonitis is most often caused by:
  • Trauma
  • Overuse
  • Repetitive or power jumping
  • Poor muscle flexibility
  • Age
If left untreated, patellar tendonitis can lead to degeneration of the tendon.

Young people who develop patellar tendonitis can usually blame trauma or overuse; if the condition appears in someone older, this person may also have osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Patellar Tendonitis

Patellar tendonitis usually presents itself as a dull or sharp pain around the knee area, and can worsen when engaging in any of these activities:
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Any activity that involves jumping

Relieve and Prevent Patellar Tendonitis
Patellar tendonitis can be treated with the following techniques:
  • Rest, elevate and ice the area
  • Stretch
  • Take anti-inflammatory medicine
  • Start physical therapy

If the pain and swelling from patellar tendonitis persist, consult your physician. Orthotics and/or surgery may be required.
