About Hush Puppies
In 1958, Hush Puppies created the world's first casual shoe and introduced the world to its trademark relaxed style. At a time when footwear choices were fairly limited, Hush Puppies provided the world with a new and popular alternative. By combining supple suede and lightweight crepe soles, Hush Puppies created a soft, breathable and very comfortable shoe. This was the first of many Hush Puppies innovations that would ultimately change the kind of shoes we wear.
From the beginning, Hush Puppies has always been a leader in innovation, exceptional comfort and casual style. Today, Hush Puppies continues to innovate, bringing its authentic style, casual flair and advanced technology to over 120 countries.
Ever wondered about the origins of the famous Hush Puppies name? It's an interesting story. In the late 1950s, a company salesman was enjoying a dinner of catfish and deep fried corn fritters called "hush puppies." Intrigued by the name, the salesman discovered that farmers would use these hush puppies to quiet barking dogs. At the time, tired feet were also called "barking dogs," and the salesman reasoned that his lightweight and comfortable shoes could quiet them, too. The rest is shoe history. Soon after registering the Hush Puppies trademark, the company purchased the photograph of the lovable, soft-eyed basset hound that would become its logo and grace millions of Hush Puppies shoes, boxes, ads and displays.
Hush Puppies were introduced to the world at the Chicago's National Shoe Fair in October 1957. Retailers flocked to their booth, intrigued by Hush Puppies casual and innovative styling, brushed suede uppers and lightweight crepe soles. By mid-1959, the company had produced its first million pairs, and by 1963, one in ten adults in the United States owned a pair of Hush Puppies.
Throughout its history, Hush Puppies has been all about comfort and innovation. They created the first casual shoe with Worry-Free Suede®, and this revolutionary use of Scotchgard® leather protector forever changed suede footwear. The process made Hush Puppies leather resistant to scuffs, stains and water, and that "worry free" look and feel became a hallmark of Hush Puppies shoes and its brand attitude.
In the 1980s, Hush Puppies ushered in the walking shoe era with the Hush Puppies "Body Shoe®" that combined dual-density soles and soft foam insoles that mimicked that walking barefoot in the sand feeling. In 1990, Hush Puppies made waves with the introduction of Bounce® technology. The patented Bounce outsole absorbs the shock of walking impact, while gently moving you forward through your step.
Today, Hush Puppies continues to innovate through advances in technology. From lightweight Zero G® styles, to reverse action WaveReflex® technology, to the environmentally-friendly Harmony™ initiative, Hush Puppies world-renowned comfort continue to improve and evolve.
