Hallux Valgus

If your big toe looks misshapen and protrudes from the side of your foot, you could have a hallux valgus, or bunion.

  • A bunion is a common term for the medical condition hallux valgus.
  • A hallux valgus found on the outside of the foot on or below the fifth (baby) toe is known as a bunionette, and can also cause intense pain.

Symptoms: Do You Have a Bunion (Hallux Valgus)?

Symptoms of hallux valgus can show up in a variety of ways.

The first and most obvious symptom: Has your big toe changed shape? Does it seem to be curving inward toward the other toes? If so, you most likely have a hallux valgus.

Other symptoms of hallux valgus include:
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain of the joint at the base of the big toe

What Causes Pain Associated with a Hallux Valgus?

A hallux valgus is caused by a combination of factors, including:
  • An active lifestyle.
  • Improperly fitting shoes, or shoes that don’t have enough room in the toe box, such as many women’s fashion shoes with pointy-toes.
  • Foot Type
    • A foot that pronates, or rolls inward excessively when walking, has a higher tendency for forming a hallux valgus, as this type of foot creates an imbalance with the muscles and tendons around the great toe joint. This causes the great toe to deviate toward the outside of the foot, while the bone in front of it shifts toward the inside of the foot.

Relieve and Prevent Hallux Valgus Pain

A hallux valgus is most commonly treated and prevented with some simple adjustments to your shoes. Follow these steps to help alleviate pain caused by a hallux valgus:
  • Buy well-fitting shoes with a wide toe box.
  • Use bunion shields, bunion pads or bunion cushions to protect the bunion when wearing shoes. A bunion sleeve can be especially effective at relieving shoe pressure when walking with a hallux valgus.
  • Utilize an orthotic device or insert, such as a bunion splint or bunion brace, to redistribute the pressure along the arch and ball of the foot and control the separation of the bones. These devices help support your foot and reduce the tendency toward hallux valgus formation.
  • Use a bunion regulator to stretch tight tendons and toe muscles overnight – especially if you want to avoid surgery.
