Bunion Brace

When should you consider using a bunion brace? If your big toe looks misshapen and protrudes from the side of your foot, you could have a bunion, a bony protrusion of the great toe joint that can cause friction and pain when wearing shoes. A bunion found on the outside of the foot on or below the fifth (or baby) toe, known as a bunionette, can also cause intense bunion pain.

Relieve and Prevent Bunion Pain by Using a Bunion Brace

A good way to help relieve this pain is by wearing a bunion brace. A bunion brace provides good support for foot and toes so that bunions won’t get any worse.
FootSmart sells the Wheaton Bunion Brace, made of thin breathable neoprene, that adjusts to your big toe and provides a gentle corrective force to help prevent bunion deformities from worsening. However, this bunion brace is not recommended for people suffering from diabetes or poor circulation.
In general, you can treat and prevent bunion pain by making some simple adjustments to your shoes, and again, combining better fitting shoes with a bunion brace can really help decrease bunion pain. |

Follow these steps to help alleviate bunion pain:

- Buy well-fitting shoes with a wide toe box.
- Use bunion shields, bunion pads (which also come in gel bunion pad form) or bunion cushions to protect the bunion when wearing shoes. A bunion sleeve can be especially effective at relieving shoe pressure when walking.
- Utilize an orthotic device or insert, such as a bunion brace, to redistribute the pressure along the arch and ball of the foot and control the separation of the bones. A bunion brace will help support your foot and reduce the tendency toward bunion formation.
In severe cases, when bunion pain becomes hard to live with, The Podiatry Institute suggests you see a doctor to determine if corrective surgery is needed. A bunion brace just might not be what you need to find total relief.
