Supination: Information and Products for Relief

When your feet go out of alignment and your gait (the way you walk) changes, your entire body can feel the affects. One type of negative walking stance is called supination.

What is Supination?

People who walk with their feet turned inward have a condition called supination, and usually also have high foot arches. People who have supination may also refer to their condition as being “pigeon-toed.” Supination is not to be confused with pronation, when people walk with their feet turned outward. Supination can cause foot, ankle, knee, hip and back pain, so it’s important to correct your stance.

The Dangers of Supination

Supination puts you at a very high risk for ankle sprains and other ankle injuries. People with supination, who put pressure on the outside of their ankles, tend to get repeated ankle sprains because their actions weaken the ankle muscles. Ankle sprains, the number one injury concerning the ankle joint, typically affect the ligaments of the ankle.

Products for Supination

If you have supination, there are several different types of products that can help correct your walk. Just check out a few of the products for supination available at FootSmart:

  • Heel Cups for Supination

Wearing heel cups in your shoes is a good way to help correct supination. The FootSmart Posture Corrective Heel Cups, for example are designed to correct your alignment (either supination or pronation) while providing superior foot shock protection. People with supination who use these heel cups should place the thicker portion on the outside of the heel.

  • Ankle Braces for Supination

Using an ankle brace can help correct supination and protect your ankles from sprains or injuries. The Royce Speed Ankle Brace uses Exform™ technology to quickly and easily stabilize weak ankles and help treat supination.

  • Orthotics for Supination

Many different kinds of orthotics (insoles, custom orthotics, inserts, foot supports, etc.) can be inserted into shoes to help make sure you walk correctly. If you need orthotics for supination, there are many you can try, including the 3/4-Length High Arch Foot Supports. With their contoured shape, these orthotics support feet both lengthwise and across the arch, keeping feet properly aligned, correcting supination while cradling and stabilizing heels.
